Sports
Background
The Ibdaa sports project was set up in 1999 with the formation of a men’s football team of mixed age from within Deheisheh refugee camp. The project soon developed to involve additional sports and more focused age groups: there are currently male football and table-tennis teams for various ages and male and female basketball and volleyball teams. Wherever possible each sport has a junior (14-15 years) and senior (18-20 years) team, which allows the players to develop their skills and ensures that the standards in the senior teams are very high,The teams are coached by groups of specialist volunteers from Deheisheh and the local area.

Conclusions
Participation in a team sport provides an excellent source of physical acitivity but can also help develop social skills and provide emotional support. Winning a match or competition engenders a sense of achievement, which is very important for children in a refugee camp, The sports project has a wide reach, more than 200 people from Deheisheh camp and the surrounding area now being involved with a team in some capacity;Nonetheless the project still faces many difficulties, including a lack of dedicated facilities in Deheisheh camp and financial constraints, as well as the non-professional status of the teams, which requires all practice and matches to be scheduled around work and family commitments.

BasketballStarting a basketball team in Deheisheh camp meant overcoming a number of challenges, including a lack of enthusiasm for the sport, which was not usually played in the camp, partly because of a lack of facilities and partly because of limited interest in the professional teams in the area. The formation of a female team was also hindered by the fact that many families had reservations about their daughters taking part in a team sport.
Table TennisThere are junior and senior men’s table tennis teams. The senior team is in the first league and competed in the Palestine Championship in 2010.
VolleyballThe first volleyball team was established for men in 2004 and the female teams were formed in 2006. Between 2004 and 2008 the men’s team achieved a high level of success, winning many tournaments, though it is currently the women’s teams who are more successful, the senior team being the Palestinian Champions.
